I wrote 'Loser' soon after moving away from New Orleans some years ago. I was feeling confused about romantic relationships and the push and pull that seemed to come with them--thinking a lot about dedication and loyalty, heartbreak and broken promises, and the feeling like you would do anything in order to make it work--yet not really knowing what to do. In essence, I was feeling that way about New Orleans too, like I had done my best, and despite all the love, I had to move on, or at least try to.
lyrics
You said it out of love, you said that we would never fall apart, you said I’d never lose you, you said that it would never be this hard. But you, could see right through.....me.
Rode down to Opelousas, rode down there with the devil on my back, well I caught a train to Nashville, I caught it and I’m never coming back. Cuz you, did something to......
I could go anywhere, like you’ve always gone. I would do anything, to get you home. I’d even break a heart, hell I’d break two, if only I could stop the pain, of loving you...
You said I was your lover, you said that i would never be your friend, you said I’d never lose you, and that we’d be together in the end. But you, could see right through.....me.
Woke up before the dawning. Woke up before the sun was in the sky. My heart was full of yearning. I called your name but there was no reply. Cuz you, did something to......
I could go anywhere, like you’ve always gone. I would do anything, to get you home. I’d even break a heart, hell I’d break two, if only I could stop the pain, of loving you...
